What could drive a family from their once-grand home? Whispers of mischief, unseen visitors, and a l

UNINVITED LITTLE GUESTS

Legend has it the house we just walked passed was haunted, and not by ghosts. Word on the street was it’s infested with fairies, and not the good kind. Apparently the local town-folk there think the reason that big beautiful house remained empty all these years later was because of those mischievous little beings. No one has ever actually seen one, but that never stopped the stories from swirling about.

We noticed that lovely house on one of our short weekend road trips. It was off the beaten path but somehow we spotted it. If you asked me I think the house looked like something right out of a scary movie. It was in a sleepy little town just a few miles from our home. They were having a huge block-party. That’s what brought us to that town in the first place. There were several food vendors, some arts and crafts tables, a few beer vendors, and one really good live band. The kind of thing you would think of when you picture a small town gathering. The path where all those vendors were, ended at the driveway to the alleged haunted house. I couldn’t wait to get a closer look but It was hidden behind a group of large trees and shrubs. Blocking any view from where we were standing. I wondered if we went up there, would we possibly see some fairies ourselves. The thought of which gave me butterflies from both fear and excitement.

To my surprise I actually convinced my hubby to take a walk up the driveway for a better look. He was reluctant because he didn’t want to get shot for trespassing. I told him it was most likely abandoned by the looks of it. The grass was overgrown and there were visible spots of damage to parts of the roof. There were vines of ivy growing up and around the outside walls of the house. So much so, that if someone was living there they would’ve had a hard time opening any one of those windows. I wanted to walk around the entire house to see what it really looked like, but the land was a bit too overgrown to get around. I could see there were several windows and doors that had been broken or boarded up. We both felt much better when we saw that. We believed that meant the house was truly abandoned. I mean who would’ve thought someone in their right mind would want to live there in that condition. Better yet, the fact that we both believed no one lived there, meant no one would be shooting us for trespassing today.

Before we took the walk down the driveway we decided to grab some food. While waiting in line we started chatting up the local folks to get more information about this house. The common theme from most of the people was that the house was built in the thirties or forties. That it had only ever been owned by one family. Most folks believed the reason the family had let it fall into disarray was because it’s haunted by something other then ghosts.

So of course that got my creative juices flowing. I immediately started thinking of all the things that behemoth of a house had been through. I imagined the family getting fed up with all the fairy mischief. One night after hours of dealing with their nonsense they finally had enough. They decided to run out in the middle of the night. Escaping the terror they’ve endured for years. I feel like those little critters were responsible for the damage to the house. I believe its what the fairies wanted all along. I think they wanted to force the family out so they could have the entire place to themselves.

However, The local kids had other plans for that place. Now they use that house for some sort of bravery challenge. Kind of like the things we did when we were teenagers, all those years ago, a rite of passage if you will. Some locals told us the older children would tease the younger ones daring them to knock on the door. The younger kids always chickened out and would run away crying. While the teenagers would break-in and have their make out parties. I can picture it now, a large group of teenagers hanging out in there on a warm summer night. Drinking, dancing, and getting up to things teenagers do. Then suddenly some of those mischievous little fairies appear. The kids don’t notice them because, they’re teenagers. They never notice anything outside their little bubble.

The house itself is a multi-level, striking, big brick house. The kind an extremely wealthy family would’ve built back in the thirties or forties. There were several sections to this house. A covered front porch, wrapped its way around one side and continued around to the back. The main living area had a large tower located to the left side of the house. Locals believed it held a large fire place inside it. The windows were tall and narrow, giving an elegant yet mysterious look to the front of the house. I tried my hardest to picture what this house would have looked like back in its prime. It must have been one spectacular looking building for its time.

I don’t know if I believed in fairies before that road trip, but I can tell you there were more then a few strange things going on around that house. Think that’ll make ya think twice about fairies. My hubby pointed out one of the leaves on a large ivy vine creeping up the side of the house. It drew his attention because it was the only leaf moving out of the hundreds on the house. He whispered “fairy trap” and pointed at it. As soon as I turned to look at it, it stopped. We both looked at each other and at the same time decided it was a good time to head out.

As we turned to head back down the driveway we noticed something floating in mid air just above our heads. We stopped dead in our tracks, looked at each other, giggled a little from slight fear, and started running down the driveway. We must have looked so silly as we stepped around it like it was going to attack us. To a non-believer it probably looked like a ordinary leaf hanging from a tree branch. To us though we would swear it was a fairy flying there. Sent by his fairy gang to capture any humans that decided to trespass. Thankfully that wasn’t the case and we survived to tell the tale.

I would like to believe the family that deserted this once magnificent house, is still alive and well. That they fled as far away from here as possible. I imagine they kept the place all those years so no-one would stumble into one of those fairy traps. I can’t blame them really, we would’ve done the same thing had it been our house they chose to invade.
